by Starlene Rankin (starlene [at] greens.org)

Twenty-three war veterans, teachers, students and others opposed to war in Iraq were arrested today at a rally at the 5th and I Federal Building in Sacramento.

This action is one of many local actions taking place around the country during the coming weeks. According to the Pledge of Resistance, more than 5,000 people have pledged to engage in nonviolent civil disobedience in order to prevent or halt the death and destruction that U.S. military action will bring to the people of Iraq.

"We intend to draw a line for the Bush Administration with our bodies, to oppose this illegal war." said a statement released by the Iraq Pledge of Resistance.

Today's rally was co-sponsored by numerous peace groups.

That's the multi-talented Jeanie Keltner, publisher of the excellent local progressive newspaper, Because People Matter, playing the guitar and leading the songs. She kept playing right up until they tied her hands together behind her back. Way to go Sister!

This is Glenn and Mary...two of the people who did civil disobedience today. Glenn is a veteran of the Vietnam War.

There's Jeanie again giving a wonderful speech to the protestors. She expressed her deep feeling of grief when thinking of the what innocent Iraqi men, women, and children are facing. She was very hopeful about the future because of the mass anti-war demonstrations all over the world. She said "A PEACE WAVE is sweeping across the globe and millions and millions of people are joining to say No To War." She said "we are breaking the law here today to stand against a greater illegality; a threatened attack on a nation that has neither attacked nor threatened us, a clear breech of international law."

At one point as we all sang "This little light of mine, i'm going lto et it shine," ..well...i just broke down and cried for a little bit...the whole scene was so moving and i so want this "war" madness to stop..

This child and father are so beautiful! This child, my grandbaby back in Iowa and all children everywhere deserve to live a full and happy life in a society where justice, democracy, peace and caring for our planet is celebrated and valued.

Stay tuned for part 2 with 10 more photos
